In this article, we tried to shed light on the social critical vision presented by Jürgen Habermas regarding of the contemporary Western society. He believed that the crisis of instrumental rationality on which the members of the first generation of the school, such as Herbert Marquis, focused, could be overcome thanks to the philosophy of dialogue and communicative rationality. Habermas was not affected by pessimism like some members of the first generation of the school, but he still believes in the ability of the mind to overcome the stage of obstruction experienced by contemporary Western man. He claims that he mind that built an ancient civilization after a bitter struggle against the intellectual inertia established by the church and the royal systems, can liberate man from most of the restrictions imposed by the dominant industrial ideology. He believes that modernity is a project that has not yet been completed, and it is the same for democracy. So, in this article, we wonder about the relationship of science and technology to domination through the social critical theory of Marcuse and Habermas? We also examine the limits of compatibility and difference between two philosophers belonging to the same critical heritage? To what extent can the alternative presented by Marcuse and Habermas be applied in practice?
