Abstract

Tandem Language Learning (TLL) is a form of language collaboration that brings a pair of learners to a reciprocal language give-and-take, enhancing their motivation, feedback provision/reception, and autonomy. This research, part of a pilot study in a large-scale longitudinal study, investigates learners’ familiarity with and interest in TLL, as well as their perceptions of its role in supporting motivation, feedback exchange, and autonomy. Four research questions are posed: (1) What is the level of familiarity of Algerian EFL learners with TLL, and how interested are they in engaging with it? (2) What are their perceptions of TLL-driven motivation? (3) What are their perceptions regarding TLL-driven feedback? (4) How do they perceive autonomy in language learning, and what role does TLL play in fostering learner autonomy? A questionnaire was administered via Google Forms to 58 Algerian learners of English. Data are analysed using SPSS. The findings suggest the need to raise learners’ awareness of TLL and to further explore its use in the Algerian EFL context.
