This paper addresses the interplay of authority, power and resistance in Fatima Mernissi’s memoir Dreams of Trespass focusing on the Moroccan harem as a locus where patriarchal power is imposed and subverted. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concepts of power, surveillance, and defiance, the research explores how spatial confinement and social norms function not merely through overt domination, but through internalized discipline and regulating behaviors. The narrative also foregrounds multiple forms of resistance highlighting that agency can be exercised even in enclosed spheres. In re- imagining the harem as a site of negotiation and female agency, the author demonstrates that power is not absolute and dominant, but it is disciplinary and productive, teaching self governing and regulation.
