Identity Crisis In Orientalist Thought

Authors : Abdellah Mustapha .

Abstract

Orientalism is epitomized by the Western view of the Eastern other. Edward Said's book, "Orientalism," is considered a decisive turning point in understanding the self from the perspective of Western colonialism, which seeks to impose its ideologies with the aim of despising the Muslim Easterner. Edward Said drew from the Eastern tributary, imbued with the spirit of Islam and the principles of faith, and the Western tributary, filled with schemes to control the "other" and devalue it. His book was a deconstruction of the Western Orientalist vision. Therefore, we sought to define the concept of "Orientalism" and the mechanisms of its use by Orientalists, employing a critical, analytical, and comparative approach to reveal the reality of the Easterner and how it is represented by the Western colonizer. How did Arab thinkers view Orientalism and Orientalists? How did Edward Said define Orientalism? And what are the Western mechanisms for promoting biased Orientalist thought?
