Islamic Civilization In Orientalist Consciousness: A Philosophical Reading Of Gustave Le Bon's Thought

Authors : Boumahdi Zineb .

Abstract

Abstract: This study addresses the epistemological issues related to the representation of the "civilizational other" in Western thought, through an analysis of the image of Islamic civilization in Orientalist consciousness. It is an analytical study of the thought of Gustave Le Bon, a nineteenth-century European thinker. The study focuses on how Le Bon presented his conceptions of Islamic civilization, relying on a psychological and social approach to interpret the manifestations of its historical development. The study seeks to analyze the cognitive backgrounds that guided Le Bon's writings and explore his representations of Islam and Muslims within the context of modern Western thought. The study adopts a critical analytical approach to link the content of the discourse and its position within the general field of Orientalism. The study concludes that Le Bon's conception combines recognition of the achievements of Islamic civilization with framing it within a specific historical vision, which allows for a deeper understanding of the representation of the "other" in modern European thought.
