This article explores linguistic prestige, a social value attributed to languages or their varieties, rather than an intrinsic quality. It examines its foundations, whether they are socio-historical (power, institutions) or linked to speakers' perceptions (stereotypes, linguistic insecurity). The article distinguishes between overt prestige, which is consciously valued and tied to the norm, and covert prestige, which is implicit and a marker of group identity. It then analyzes the concrete consequences of this prestige on individual linguistic choices, educational policies, language vitality, and social integration, illustrating these dynamics with historical and contemporary examples (Latin, standard French, Arabic dialects).
