Innovation Attributes Impact On Islamic Banking Services Adoption: The Mediating Role Of Consumer Attitudes

Authors : Marouane Sahraoui . Idjri Kheira .

Abstract

This study examines the adoption of Islamic banking services in Algeria through a consumer behavior perspective grounded in Diffusion of Innovation Theory. It focuses on three perceived innovation attributes—compatibility, complexity, and observability—and investigates their effects on consumer attitudes and, subsequently, on adoption. The study argues that prior research has largely emphasized direct determinants of adoption while paying less attention to the psychological mechanism through which service perceptions are translated into evaluative orientations and behavioral outcomes, particularly in emerging markets . Using a conceptual model in which attitudes mediate the relationship between perceived service attributes and adoption, the findings show that compatibility positively influences attitudes, whereas complexity negatively affects them. Observability, however, does not exert a statistically significant influence. In addition, attitudes positively affect adoption and selectively mediate the effects of compatibility and complexity, but not observability . The model demonstrates moderate explanatory power, accounting for 49.1% of the variance in attitudes and 43.5% of the variance in adoption, with acceptable overall model fit . The study contributes to the literature by clarifying how consumers interpret Islamic banking service characteristics and by providing empirical evidence from the Algerian context.
