This study offers a critical synthesis of the dynamic relationship between cyberbullying and emotional intelligence (EI) in adolescence. Framing cyberbullying as a socio-technical process embedded in ecological systems, we integrate Social Information Processing, the General Aggression Model, moral disengagement, online disinhibition, and multilevel ecological theories. We distinguish ability-EI from trait-EI and map component skills—emotion perception, understanding of mixed affect, regulation, and prosocial utilization—onto adolescent roles (perpetrator, victim, bystander/defender). Evidence indicates that stronger emotion regulation and perspective-taking reduce perpetration and retaliatory spirals, and increase defending, contingent on peer norms, platform affordances, and adult/parental mediation. We critique methodological limitations—construct heterogeneity, common-source bias, and limited ecological validity—and propose remedies: multi-method EI assessment, behaviorally anchored tasks, digital trace triangulation, longitudinal and preregistered designs, and equity-focused analyses. We conclude with a multilevel educational and policy agenda that couples EI-informed SEL with platform “friction-by-design” and Restorative school climates.
