This article examines the campaign led by Cornelius Balbus Minor into the heart of the African desert during the final decades of the first century BC. It presents this expedition as one of the most daring and ambitious exploratory and military ventures undertaken by the Romans beyond the traditional boundaries of their influence in the Maghreb. This article examines the campaign led by Cornelius Balbus the Younger into the heart of the African desert during the final decades of the first century BC. It presents this expedition as one of the most daring and ambitious exploratory and military ventures undertaken by the Romans beyond the traditional boundaries of their influence in the Maghreb. By analysing the historical context of the campaign and reconstructing its likely trajectory, the article highlights its symbolic, political, and strategic dimensions, and explores its deeper implications within Rome’s broader project of redrawing the map of its influence across the known world. It also seeks to draw scholarly attention to this marginalised and often overlooked event in Arabic historical writing, given the fundamental questions it raises about Rome’s perception of the desert and its conceptualisation of the African sphere as a space open to exploration, domination, and integration into its imperial framework.
