Post-islamists: A Critical Analysis In A Contextual Perspective Of Islamist Parties In North Africa

Authors : Dahman Abdelheq . Adel Djareche .

Abstract

The Arab Spring has brought Islamist movements significant obstacles through state crackdowns and internal conflicts and declining public support. The Muslim Brotherhood experienced a brief period of governance but their poor leadership led to a return of authoritarian rule. The attempt to create perfect Islamic states through essentialist approaches failed because they did not address real-world governance requirements. Some reformists inside these movements now advocate for democratic principles together with pluralism and practical political engagement that adapts to specific contexts. The Ennahda party in Tunisia transformed into Muslim democrats but Algerian Islamists lost power because of both internal conflicts and state manipulation. The Islamist movement in Morocco followed two different approaches by either working with the government or using religious principles to challenge state authority. The research demands a performance-based approach which focuses on institutional participation and governance alongside practical policy agendas. Islamist movements can regain public trust by moving away from theoretical ideology toward strategic realism and competence which enables them to make constructive contributions to modern political systems.
