The French occupation of Fezzan (1943-1951) reflected clear colonial ambitions, as France used military control, repressive administration, and politically motivated research to separate the region from Libya. However, the will of the Fezzanese inhabitants and international pressure foiled the colonial project, and with the United Nations Resolution 289 in 1949, Libyan unity was achieved. Despite the failure of the colonial project, the French experience left a valuable intellectual legacy in the geographical and social studies it produced, and profound effects on the structure of Fezzanese society
