Lire Fahla De Rabah Sebaa : Entre Arabe Algerien, Graphie Latine Et Horizon D’attente Du Lecteur Algerien

Auteurs : Hakim Chiraz .

This article offers a reading of Rabeh Sebaa’s Fahla through the combined lenses of sociolinguistics, Hans Robert Jauss’s reception theory, and Umberto Eco’s interpretative semiotics. Sebaa’s original choice to write in Algerian Arabic and to transcribe it using the Latin alphabet carries deep significance: it breaks with dominant literary norms traditionally grounded in Arabic or French and highlights the linguistic power dynamics that shape the Algerian cultural field. This scriptural and linguistic decision—both subversive and poetic—participates in a sociolinguistic effort to revalorize a popular language long relegated to the margins. From Jauss’s perspective, this acte reshapes the horizon of expectations of the contemporary Algerian reader, accustomed to institutionalized literary codes and a stable hierarchy of languages. In parallel, Eco’s framework helps illuminate how Fahla programs a reader capable of cooperating with the text, decoding its linguistic hybridities, and grasping its identity- and aesthetics-related implications. This literary approach gives voice to an intimate, plural, and socially grounded discourse. The study thus shows how Fahla shifts the boundaries of the literary, opens up an unprecedented space of reception, and brings to visibility vernacular linguistic practices often confined to the margins of cultural production.
