Comprehension And Expression Of Locative Adverbs In Individuals With Aphasia

Résumé
This research analyses the production of adverbs of place in Arabic among aphasic patients. The aim is to identify the cognitive mechanisms involved in the production of these adverbs among patients with Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia. Using linguistic tests and the neo-Khalilian syntactic model, the study examines how these patients structure adverbs of place in sentences. The results showed that Broca's aphasic patients had difficulty mobilising the syntactic pattern, which led to the production of fragmented or syntactically deficient utterances, although the lexical units used were often appropriate. In Wernicke's aphasics, the syntactic structure is generally respected, particularly the position of adverbs of place, but the inserted constituents are frequently lexically inappropriate. This manifests itself in the substitution of inappropriate lexical units, resulting in grammatically correct but semantically incoherent utterances.
