Audience Discourse Analysis In Higher Education Writing Courses

Authors : Morrow Dean Lacy .

Abstract

Teaching students to write is an age-old struggle for many instructors of higher education and even secondary education. As a solution-oriented approach, this research aims to solidify a vehicle for teaching writing centered around the concept of discourse communities. Instead of having students write essays with prompts clearly directed toward one audience member, their professor, academics should strive for actually completing the writing process with its final step in mind: publishing. If every single writing assignment in a course is directed towards an authentic audience, and if the instructor and students spend time analyzing the audience and their discourse community and conventions, student writing will improve. Students will begin to understand all aspects of a rhetorical situation on a deeper level. This paper includes research, writing samples, and strategies for teaching writing with a foundation in audience discourse.
