Factors Shaping The Adoption Of Artificial Intelligence Tools By Higher Education Students In Tanzania

Authors : Utonga Dickson .

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a significant innovation with far-reaching global impact. Nevertheless, students in higher education settings adopt AI tools inconsistently due to a variety of reasons that affect their effective use. This research examines the factors that influence the adoption of AI tools for academic purposes, specifically learning and research, by higher education students in Tanzania. This study included 142 students from various higher education institutions. It employs a probit regression framework to determine factors. The analysis results show that access to technology increases the likelihood of students in adopting AI tools. In addition, the likelihood of adopting AI tools is positively influenced by their perceived ease of use and usefulness. According to the gender analysis results, female students were less likely to adopt AI tools than their male counterparts were. Further, limited user-friendliness negatively affects AI tools adoption. The findings highlight the need for improving user-friendly interfaces, improved technological access, and technical support to promote adoption. This research contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of AI adoption in educational contexts and provides practical implications for policymakers, academic institutions, and developers interested in promoting the use of AI among students.
