Abstract

The foundation of argumentation lies in the presentation of evidence and arguments. Here, evidence is not meant in the Aristotelian sense of syllogism or proof, but rather encompasses everything that can be used to establish or refute a claim. The search for evidence indicates an attempt to dispel lingering doubts in our minds. While logical arguments, with their smooth transition from premises to conclusions, play a crucial role in removing ambiguity and doubt, another type of evidence and argumentation exists for persuasion: the dialectical or rhetorical argument. This paper aims to shed light on this concept by examining its definition, foundations, and the techniques employed in its formulation within the framework of "New Rhetoric" as presented by Chaïm Perelman (1912-1984) and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca (1899-1987)
