A Question Of Balance: Cameron, Consensus-building And The Weakening Of Conservative Leadership

Authors : Zerara Saida . Mansouri Brahim .

Abstract

In this analysis, we will explore how David Cameron's leadership authority was weakened as a result of his compromises. We will delve into the compromises he made while negotiating EU reforms, which disappointed Eurosceptic Conservatives. We will also delve into his pivotal decision to include an in/out referendum on EU membership in the 2015 Conservative manifesto, a strategic compromise aimed at countering UKIP's influence that ultimately resulted in his resignation. Furthermore, we will examine how these concessions gradually eroded Cameron's credibility as conservative individuals came to believe that he lacked conviction and resolve in his leadership approach. Through a captivating analysis, this article will contend that Cameron's decision to concede to a referendum sparked his eventual downfall, as he was incapable of handling the mounting strain after the Leave campaign's triumph. Furthermore, it will thoroughly evaluate the complexities and demands faced by leaders when navigating between building consensus and asserting control.
