Exploring The Nexus Between Research & Development Capabilities And Firm Performance Improvement: A Case Study Analysis

Abstract
This study explores the nexus between Research & Development (R&D) capabilities and firm performance improvement, with a particular focus on the pharmaceutical industry. Recognizing the pivotal role of R&D in driving innovation and sustaining competitive advantage, this research aims to empirically investigate how different dimensions of R&D—specifically, expenditure, knowledge management, and creativity—contribute to enhancing firm performance. Additionally, it examines the moderating effects of demographic (e.g., gender, age, experience) and functional (e.g., education level, job role) variables on this relationship. Drawing on a case study of Saidal Pharmaceutical Group and employing a stratified sampling of 104 respondents, the study utilizes quantitative analysis techniques to assess the impact of R&D capabilities on firm performance. Firm performance is evaluated through a multidimensional lens, incorporating financial, operational, customer, and learning & growth metrics as outlined by the Balanced Scorecard approach. The research findings indicate a strong positive correlation between R&D expenditure and knowledge management practices with firm performance across all dimensions. However, creativity, while positively associated, did not demonstrate a statistically significant impact, suggesting potential indirect benefits or the influence of unmeasured factors. Moreover, the study reveals gender as a significant demographic moderator, whereas age, experience, education level, and job role showed no substantial moderating effects on the R&D-performance relationship.
