Abstract This study examines the phenomenon of social unrest and collective despair in Egypt through a comparative historical approach that connects past periods marked by direct foreign presence—such as eras of occupation and migration—with the contemporary reality shaped by globalization and external influences. The research aims to analyze how foreign presence, in its political, economic, and cultural forms, has contributed to the emergence of social anxiety, instability, and declining trust in institutional structures. The study adopts a comparative historical-analytical methodology, drawing on selected examples from ancient Egypt—particularly periods of instability such as the First Intermediate Period—through later phases of foreign dominance, and into the modern context under global interconnectedness. It also incorporates sociological perspectives to explore transformations in collective consciousness and manifestations of frustration and despair among different social groups. The findings suggest that foreign presence, despite its varying forms across time, has often acted as a catalyst for increased societal fragility, especially when intersecting with internal crises such as social inequality and weak justice systems. However, the study also indicates that such periods have sometimes generated dynamics of resistance and the reconfiguration of national identity. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding the past to interpret the present and calls for strengthening social cohesion and developing policies capable of mitigating the effects of external dependency, thereby reducing feelings of despair and promoting greater societal stability.
