Digital Human Modeling In Workplace Design: A Cognitive Ergonomics Approach

Authors : Imane Hezabra .

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates the role of Digital Human Modeling (DHM) in redesigning work environments through an integrated cognitive ergonomics framework, with the aim of enhancing workers' psychological well-being and optimizing occupational performance. The study employed a mixed-methods approach combining systematic literature review of 122 peer-reviewed studies (2010 –2024), comparative analysis of five leading DHM software platforms against a 24-item capability framework, and scenario-based virtual modeling across three work environment typologies: industrial manufacturing, intensive care healthcare, and remote digital office work. Findings reveal that DHM platforms score an average of 78.4% on physical simulation depth but only 21.3% on cognitive representation and 9.7% on psychosocial modeling. When cognitive ergonomics variables are integrated, simulation-informed redesigns yield reductions in cognitive load of up to 23.6% and situation awareness failure risk reductions of 31.4%. A novel five-component integrative framework the Digital Human Cognitive Ergonomics (DHCE) model is proposed, along with evidence-based recommendations for researchers, practitioners, and organizational decision-makers.
