The function of naming streets is not limited only to identifying locations and addresses, but rather relates to the memory of a people, the identity and culture of a person, as each name has its historical and geographical meaning. This name is reflected in the streets, paths and paths of the city of Bejaia, a city rich in the field of nomenclature due to its cultural and historical heritage. Our goal in this article is to know the extent to which the naming of the streets of the city of Bejaia changed during the colonial and post-colonial periods, and the extent to which this naming was influenced by the historical factor in particular. In order to reach this goal, we followed the descriptive and analytical approach in collecting and analyzing data in the study, based on the methodology of comparing the most important maps and different street designations in the city of Bejaia. Finally, we conclude that although the Algerian state changed the colonial naming of streets and replaced them with others bearing the name of martyrs and historical events, the Bejaoui community still preserves the colonial memory, notably in the naming streets, and this is because of the region’s adherence to the cultural and social heritage that characterizes it.
