Abstract If the most prominent and widespread waqf foundations in Ottoman Algeria were undoubtedly those serving the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina, the endowments tied to Sidi Ali ibn al-Mubarak carried no less weight in the city of Koléa. This is a place of remarkable historical depth and cultural distinction, yet—rather tragically—it has remained almost entirely overlooked by scholars, particularly when it comes to the Ottoman period. Like so many other celebrated Algerian cities of that era, Koléa holds a history that deserves far greater attention. It was founded in 957 AH (1550 CE) by Hasan Pasha, son of the legendary Khayr al-Din Barbarossa, who ruled between 1544 and 1551. According to tradition, he settled a community of Andalusian refugees here—Muslims fleeing the terrors of the Spanish Inquisition—establishing the town of Koléa on a hillside near the coast, just west of Algiers, with lush and fertile plains stretching below. It is hardly surprising that these exiles chose this spot. The landscape bore an unmistakable resemblance to Granada, and in their longing to keep the memory of their lost homeland alive, they naturally sought to preserve something of its spirit in the very ground beneath their feet. The city’s importance only deepened with the establishment of the shrine of Shaykh Ali ibn al-Mubarak, who died in 1040 AH (1631 CE). This study sets out to examine the waqfs of Sidi Ali ibn al-Mubarak in Koléa through a carefully selected sample of archival documents drawn from the records of the Shari'a courts. Drawing specifically on waqf deeds pertaining to the Jami' of Sidi Ali ibn al-Mubarak, the evidence points to a well-ordered system of pious endowment rooted in social solidarity. It reveals, moreover, the active role women played in dedicating property, and a tightly knit administrative structure of imams and custodians who oversaw these foundations. In conclusion, the Shari'a court records emerge as an extraordinarily rich source for reconstructing the history of local waqf institutions, even if the scarcity of surviving documents for this region and the dearth of specialized studies continue to present serious methodological challenge
