Abstract

This paper draws on ecolinguistic theory and systemic functional linguistics as a lens to analyse the conceptual frames embedded in the environmental policies of Pakistan. Given the trajectory of environmental degradation of Pakistan, being ranked at the seventh most affected countries, there is a need for linguistic analysis of how environmental policy discourse perpetuates misleading orientation towards ecological behaviour. This linguistic communication constructs a particular reality of environment which seems oppressive and anthropocentric that under-represents all other life and earth itself. So much so that the discourse produced to advocate environmental concerns paradoxically makes use of the oppressive linguistic structures that tend to distance it from its actual political cause. Evidently, the environmental policies of Pakistan emphasize scientific values and consumerist practices, which contribute to non-ecological behaviour and unsustainable environment. The analysis has revealed that the environmental policies employ anthropocentric stories to serve the primary benefits of mankind more than environment– a concern which questions the validity of environmental management with reference to environmental policy texts. We suggest that the National Environmental Policies of Pakistan, being part of green consciousness discourse, require more positive ecological stories. This can help enhance public awareness of environmental issues and encourage more sustainable behaviour.
