Teaching Gen Z: What Teachers Need To Know

Authors : Ghaskil Abir Soundous .

Abstract

This study examines the challenges and opportunities of teaching Generation Z learners, who are often described as digital natives. It highlights the gap between digital natives, students born into a technological environment, and digital immigrants, teachers who were educated in a pre-digital age. Drawing on both literature and a case study conducted at Batna 2 University, Algeria, the research explores teachers’ and students’ perceptions of each other’s practices, focusing on teaching methods, classroom interaction, and technology integration. Data was collected through questionnaires administered to 10 teachers and 30 second-year students in the English department. Findings reveal that teachers often struggle to adapt traditional methods to the learning styles of digital natives, while students express dissatisfaction with lecture-based instruction and request greater use of technology and interactive learning. The paper argues for the importance of professional development, curriculum redesign, and constructivist approaches that integrate digital tools. It concludes that effective teaching of Generation Z requires balancing technology with meaningful teacher-student relationships, ensuring both innovation and human connection in higher education.
