Depreciation Of The Algerian Dinar And Foreign Trade: A Historical And Prospective Analysis

Authors : Ferrat Marzouk . Chitti Mohand .

Abstract

This study analyses the effects of the depreciation of the Algerian dinar on Algeria’s foreign trade. Adopting a historical and forward-looking approach, it examines the evolution of exchange rate policy since independence, the structure of exports and imports, and the transmission mechanisms of currency depreciation. The results show that, given the specific nature of the Algerian economy—which is heavily dependent on hydrocarbon exports and faces structural rigidity in imports—the expected effects of depreciation on the trade balance are very limited, and may even be counterproductive through imported inflation. The article argues for a strategy of economic diversification as a necessary condition for the effectiveness of exchange rate policy.
