Contribution Of Kinematic Variables To 100 M Breaststroke Performance: An Analytical Study Of Iraqi Youth National Team Swimmers

Authors : Safi Khudhair Mohammed .

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the contribution of selected kinematic variables to the performance of the 100 m breaststroke among swimmers of the Iraqi Youth National Team. Breaststroke technique is considered one of the key factors in maintaining swimming speed through the coordinated interaction between leg propulsion and arm pull, as well as the precise timing of these movements. In addition, several kinematic variables, such as the position of the body's center of mass and joint angles, contribute significantly to improving movement efficiency and enhancing athletic performance. The researcher adopted a descriptive research design using the survey method, as it was deemed appropriate for the nature of the problem and the objectives of the study. The study sample consisted of eight breaststroke swimmers from the Iraqi Youth National Team, selected purposively. Data were statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results revealed statistically significant positive correlations between first 50 m performance and several kinematic variables, including horizontal push-off distance, knee joint angle, ankle joint angular velocity, and glide time. Conversely, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between the horizontal acceleration of the toe joint and performance time in the first half of the race. Furthermore, statistically significant positive correlations were identified between second 50 m performance and a number of kinematic variables, including resultant ankle velocity, knee joint angle, resultant hip velocity, arm pull distance, glide time, pull time, hand entry and glide phase, horizontal acceleration of the center of mass, hip joint angle, vertical velocities of the toe and ankle, resultant knee acceleration, and elbow joint angle. In contrast, statistically significant negative correlations were observed between second 50 m performance and horizontal toe acceleration, vertical ankle acceleration, and knee joint angular velocity. The study concluded that several kinematic variables significantly influence 100 m breaststroke performance among Iraqi Youth National Team swimmers. These findings highlight the importance of biomechanical analysis in evaluating technical performance and guiding training programs toward the development of the variables that have the greatest impact on competitive achievement.
