The Society Of Dâr Al-sultan During The Ottoman Era Through The Memoirs Of The German Captive Simon Pfeiffer

Authors : Rezzag Messaouda .

Abstract

Dâr al-Sultan during the Ottoman era was a mixture of ethnicities and religions, shaped by several converging factors, including its economic importance and its military and political role. For this reason, it attracted the interest of many residents, whether Arabs or Europeans—especially captives. Among them was the German captive who lived there for many years, during which he came to know this society and its activities. He wrote his memoirs and referred to the various groups that made up Dâr al-Sultan. This study aims to introduce the captive Simon Pfeiffer and to highlight the social composition of Dâr al-Sultan as he described it. The research relied on a historical, synthetic, and analytical method. It concludes that each group in Dâr al-Sultan had specific tasks, and despite religious and ethnic differences, they coexisted peacefully within the city.
