English as a foreign language has become one of the 21st century’s skills within the current educational systems. Hence, EFL textbooks play a central role in shaping global citizenship education through their texts, activities, structure and overall content. This study aims to investigate an underexplored area of global citizenship values embedded in the Algerian fifth grade primary educational textbook. To this end, the study opts for a qualitative research design based on Fairclough’s three- dimensional model whereby a critical discourse analysis is conducted. The analysis centers on investigating the representation of local and global cultures along gaining an understanding about the extent to which young learners can be equipped with the needed skills, competence and awareness to become “global” citizens. The findings reveal that the textbook incorporates aspects which promote G.C.E though stronger emphasis on a balanced approach for more global perspectives is required.
