The contemporary Algerian novel has occupied a prominent epistemological and aesthetic position within the literary field, evolving into a narrative genre capable of absorbing the transformations of local reality and representing its contradictions. It achieves this through imaginative structures that internalize implicit ideological systems and latent discourses concealed within the fabric of language and the pathways of narrative expression. Based on this premise, this study seeks to approach Bachir Mefti’s novel Ghosts of the Murdered City from a thematic perspective. It aims to deconstruct the dynamics of local spatial formation and explore the representations of Algiers as an urban space charged with historical, cultural, and symbolic density, which ultimately contributes to consolidating the theme of locality within the narrative corpus. Furthermore, the study endeavors to uncover the ontological and conceptual dimensions of space, tracing their operational mechanisms in producing narrative signification. By analyzing the interconnections between space and the other components of novelistic discourse, the study highlights how the city transforms from a mere geographical given into a semantic structure that generates meaning and frames the experience of novelistic writing
