ABSTRACT : The religious question in colonial Algeria represented a central dimension of French colonial policy, given the fundamental role of Islam in shaping Algerian collective identity and sustaining the cultural and civilizational cohesion of society. In this context, the colonial administration sought to subordinate the religious sphere to the imperatives of its colonial project through a range of legal and administrative measures targeting Islamic institutions and their socio-cultural functions. This article examines the nature of French colonial intervention in Islamic religious affairs in Algeria between 1830 and 1947, with particular focus on the role of the Directorate of Native Affairs in supervising and regulating the religious sphere in ways that advanced the objectives of colonial control and domination. It addresses the following central question: To what extent did the Directorate of Native Affairs instrumentalize the religious question in the service of the French colonial project, and what were the implications of this policy for the religious and cultural life of Algerians? Methodologically, the study adopts a historical-analytical approach, tracing the evolution of colonial religious policy through the examination of legal texts, administrative decrees, archival documents, and specialized historical scholarship. The findings indicate that the colonial administration transformed the religious sphere into a mechanism of control and subjugation by confiscating awqāf (Islamic endowments), monitoring mosques and zāwiyas, intervening in pilgrimage affairs and religious education, and suppressing independent reformist activism. At the same time, the study demonstrates that this exclusionary policy paradoxically contributed to the strengthening of religious and national consciousness among Algerians and to the consolidation of cultural and civilizational forms of resistance to the colonial project.
