Free Software For Library Management And Digital Knowledge Dissemination Systems: Another Choice For Libraries?

Abstract
The objective of this article is, first to differentiate between free software and proprietary software, also, to define free software and the different terms used in the literature; then to provide a history of free software, after which we will list the advantages and the disadvantages of free software and finally provide an overview of the solutions available in free software. The methodology used in writing this article is descriptive and analytical method. We began by describing five free software or free library systems and two software of disseminating of digital collections by giving all their characteristics and differences and their advantages compared with a proprietary system. We conclude in the end of this paper that the libraries have more benefits to choose a free software to computerize their functions and to give access to their digital contents by using systems of dissemination of digital collections like DSpace or Greenstone.
