The Ouled Nail region occupied a strategic geographical and economic position as a vital link between northern and southern Algeria and a crossroads of major trade routes. This importance led the French colonial authorities to impose control over the area in 1851 and transform Djelfa into a military zone. In response, the inhabitants of Mount Boukahil and its surrounding slopes resisted colonial domination from the early years of occupation, using the mountain’s rugged topography as a natural stronghold against French military expansion toward the Sahara. The geological structure of Mount Boukahil created diverse natural and topographical features that attracted several exploratory missions, which produced reports on the region’s geography, tribal composition, and historical events during the nineteenth century. This article examines the geographical and strategic significance of Mount Boukahil and highlights its role in resistance, protection of the local population, and provision of essential resources.
