Social And Economic Drivers Of Environmental Policy

Authors : Markmal Ali .

Abstract

This paper examines the social and economic drivers shaping environmental policy in contemporary governance. It argues that environmental policymaking is influenced not only by scientific evidence but also by societal pressures and economic considerations. Social drivers such as environmental awareness, social movements, environmental justice advocacy, and generational influence have significantly increased public demand for sustainable governance. At the same time, economic drivers—including the financial costs of environmental degradation, green innovation, job creation, and government incentives—provide strong material justification for policy reform. Despite these motivating factors, the implementation of effective environmental policies faces persistent political and economic barriers, particularly in developing economies where growth priorities often conflict with sustainability objectives. The paper concludes that successful environmental governance requires integrating social equity, economic incentives, and long-term political commitment to achieve sustainable development.
