This study examines the determinants of CO₂ emissions in Algeria using time series data from 1980 to 2022. Employing the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, we analyze the short-run and long-run dynamics of emissions in relation to economic growth, energy consumption, and population growth. The findings reveal that energy intensity and total primary energy consumption significantly increase CO₂ emissions in the long run, while renewable energy consumption plays a crucial role in emissions mitigation. Population growth contributes to higher emissions, highlighting the need for demographic considerations in environmental policies. Notably, long-run economic growth per capita does not significantly impact emissions, suggesting potential decoupling of economic development from environmental degradation. The results emphasize the importance of enhancing energy efficiency, investing in renewable energy, and implementing sustainable policies for Algeria's transition toward environmental sustainability.
