This study aimed to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and emotional intelligence among psychology students at the University of Mostaganem, Algeria. A cross-sectional, correlational design was employed on a purposive sample of 101 students (82.2% female, 17.8% male). Data were collected using the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and an independent samples t-test. The results revealed a notable prevalence of problematic internet use, with 22.8% of students classified as addicted and 45.5% as excessive users. A statistically significant, yet weak, negative correlation was found between internet addiction and emotional intelligence (r = -0.20, p = .040). However, no significant difference in total emotional intelligence scores was observed between the addicted and non-addicted groups. The study concludes that while a modest inverse relationship exists, suggesting that lower emotional intelligence is associated with a higher tendency toward problematic internet use, other factors likely contribute to the development of severe addiction. These findings underscore the need for preventive university programs that enhance students' emotional skills and promote balanced digital engagement within the Algerian academic context.
