Authors : Touazi Fadila .

Abstract

Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is frequently associated with intellectual disability and a range of developmental and health-related complications. Among the most significant challenges are weight gain, often resulting from excessive eating and limited physical activity, which is further exacerbated by muscle hypotonia and delayed motor development. Additionally, many children with Down syndrome present with congenital heart defects, including atrial and ventricular septal defects and valvular abnormalities. Other common medical concerns include partial or complete hearing loss, visual impairments, and thyroid gland disorders, alongside a spectrum of related health conditions. This paper investigates the psychological trauma experienced by mothers of children with Down syndrome. At the heart of this trauma lies the collapse of the narcissistic ideal—the imagined perfect child—replaced by a reality marked by medical uncertainty and emotional upheaval. The study further examines the coping strategies these mothers employ to navigate their new reality, adapt to their circumstances, and gradually reconcile with the profound shock of the diagnosis.
