Abstract: The study of Occidentalism and Orientalism falls within the framework of the philosophy of the self, which fundamentally examines the ego, the self, and the relationship between the ego and the other. Orientalism represents the Western ego studying the Eastern other, while Occidentalism represents the Muslim ego studying the Western other. In this context, knowledge of the other arises, which may be distorted, objective, subjective, or otherwise. In all cases, this knowledge is conditioned by the civilizational and cultural position of the ego. Here, the problem of the relationship between knowledge and value emerges. Knowledge is linked to society through some form of value—such as economy and utility, liberation, domination and hegemony, ethics, or religion. As a result, knowledge assumes a social function by virtue of this value. Based on this, the article aims to explore the civilizational and cultural value of both Orientalism and Occidentalism. As for the findings: despite its diversity, Orientalism has remained confined within the desire for domination and control, which stemmed from Western modernity—modernity that, since its inception, has tied knowledge to power, dominance, and control. On the other hand, the problem with Occidentalism lies in its foundations: it emerged alongside the concept of nationalism, which is itself a Western construct. This renders Occidentalism incapable of fulfilling its goal—liberation..
