Balancing Act: Algeria's Foreign Policy Amidst Us-china Strategic Competition

Abstract
Algeria’s foreign policy, rooted in non-alignment and sovereignty, faces renewed challenges amid U.S.–China strategic competition. This study examines how Algeria balances relations with both powers while preserving autonomy. Using a mixed-methods approach, it analyzes trade, investment, and arms data alongside policy documents. Algeria counterterrorism cooperation. Findings show expanding economic links with China and selective security collaboration with the United States, all within Algeria’s principles of sovereignty and non-interference. The study concludes that Algeria’s pragmatic hedging illustrates how middle powers in the Global South navigate an evolving multipolar order.
