Meaning Between Separation And Connection

Abstract
Like other languages, the Arabic language provides a set of mechanisms and technical frameworks that constitute some of the highest forms of beauty appreciated by refined literary taste in the expressive pathways of the desired poetic eloquence to which languages aspire on the scale of rhetorical radiance and stylistic creativity. Among these is the concept of separation and connection (al-fasl wa-l-wasl), which the Arabs regarded as the very essence and pillar of eloquence. It represents a distinctive core element in their linguistic structure, closely linked to the process of coordinating a sentence—or refraining from coordinating it—with the following one, based primarily on the particle “wa” (and) rather than other conjunctions. In this lies a rich field of study filled with subtle linguistic nuances, abundant in meanings and connotations of remarkable beauty.
