The Essentialist Child-orientedness Of American And Japanese Animation In Algerian Academia: A Critical Review

Authors : Hadji Ikhlas . Kerboua Salim .

Abstract

Rather than remaining confined to the realm of children’s entertainment, animation has been reconstructed as a medium capable of addressing multiple audience groups through tailored content. However, by strictly addressing transnational animation as localized children’s content in the Arab world, Algerian academia is fixated on viewing animation as essentially child-oriented. This paper critically reviews some Algerian research on animation (particularly, anime and American cartoons) to evaluate its consistency with the reconceptualization of animation’s content and audience. Focused on a media effects paradigm, the reviewed papers fail to engage with two fundamental frameworks: 1) animation audience segmentation beyond children, and 2) the transformation of media landscapes in these animations’ countries of origin, which allowed for a reconstruction of what animation and its audience can be. This failure undermines the practical usefulness of the results for advancing research on animation and child entertainment as well as for organizing relevant industrial practices in Algeria and the Arab world. Therefore, a consideration of a constructivist framework for understanding animation is encouraged in future research.
