In parallel with the transformations of contemporary literary discourse, metanarrative emerges as one of the most radical manifestations of the postmodern narrative project. It does not merely dismantle the traditional structures that have long constituted the central core of narrative practice, but rather moves beyond them toward a fundamental questioning of the very nature of narrative, its function, and its representational limits. Metanarrative does not approach the story as a complete structure or a mirror of reality, but as a conditional linguistic act, open to deconstruction and reformation. It reconsiders the relationship between the text and itself-its formative mechanisms-by laying bare its tools and exposing the artificiality behind the illusion of realism. As an internal critical discourse that emerges from within the text itself, metanarrative works to fragment the authority of the central narrator and redistribute roles between the producer and the receiver. This process leads to the creation of a fractured narrative space that invites the reader into an interpretive engagement, rather than passive narrative consumption. From this perspective, metanarrative is not merely an aesthetic technique, but an ideological stance that resists all forms of authority embedded in narrative practice—be it a closed plot, linear storytelling, or an omniscient voice that feigns neutrality and total knowledge. Thus, metanarrative becomes a manifestation of a distinct critical consciousness, aiming to establish an open narrative horizon—one that rethinks the relationship between text and reader, between language and meaning, and between imagination and its contexts of production.
