Islamic Banking As A Bridge To Financial Inclusion: Realities, Challenges, And Prospects

Authors : Hireche Abdelkader . Seddi Ali .

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the role of Islamic banks as a catalyst for financial inclusion, focusing on how their Shariah-compliant principles bridge the gap left by conventional banking. The research sought to diagnose key challenges—such as regulatory hurdles and low financial literacy—while exploring opportunities presented by technological innovation, using Algeria as a case study. The study found that Islamic banking is fundamentally equipped to advance financial inclusion through its risk-sharing and ethical financing models, which resonate with excluded communities. However, its success is constrained by significant regulatory, educational, and infrastructural barriers. The findings affirm that the strategic adoption of financial technology (Fintech) offers the most promising path to overcome these obstacles, enabling Islamic banks to expand their outreach and unlock their full potential. Ultimately, realizing this potential requires a concerted effort to reform regulations, improve financial literacy, and invest in digital infrastructure.
