Digital Sociology – A Conceptual And Theoretical Approach

Authors : Djellala Lwiza .

Abstract

This research aims to provide a comprehensive conceptual and theoretical approach to digital sociology by defining its concept, examining its emergence and development, and exploring the key sociological approaches that explain it. Investigating these issues from a sociological perspective is essential for understanding digital transformations and their societal implications, contributing to the development of more coherent social and cultural policies in the digital age. These approaches include the network society approach, which examines the structure of social relationships and the impact of networks on identity and social interaction; the digital capital approach, which highlights the economic and cultural dimensions of digital practices and their role in deepening social inequalities; and the symbolic interactionist approach, which explains the construction of the digital self through interaction processes and the negotiation of meanings in digital spaces, where personal and social identities are reshaped according to virtual contexts. Additionally, the critical approach analyzes how digital data is employed to reinforce power relations and dominance through surveillance mechanisms and algorithms that reproduce social inequalities. Together, these approaches provide a comprehensive understanding of digital sociology, helping to develop more informed strategies that address digital transformations and their multifaceted effects on individuals and societies.
