This study adopted a descriptive qualitative design to examine both the rhetorical practices and the contextual factors influencing Algerian researchers’ structuring of research article introductions in the field of English Applied Linguistics. The study also aimed to assess whether these structuring patterns aligned with Swales’ CARS model. Data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire completed by 25 university teachers across various Algerian institutions. The findings revealed common challenges in articulating the research gap, maintaining rhetorical coherence, and meeting journal expectations. Participants reported acquiring structural knowledge through reading and imitation rather than formal instruction. They also emphasized the strong influence of disciplinary norms, institutional standards and cultural background on rhetorical choices. The analysis of rhetorical moves revealed only a partial alignment with the CARS model. Finally, the study findings indicate a clear need for genre-based training in research article introduction writing to foster genre pedagogy and improve publication outcomes.
