Imitation is a fundamental skill that plays a critical role in the development of children's social and cognitive abilities, serving as a primary mechanism for learning through observing and reproducing others’ behaviors. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the concept of imitation, its forms, and its developmental stages in typically developing children, while also exploring the nature and extent of imitation deficits among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The article reviews key psychological and cognitive theories explaining the development of imitation, including classical conditioning, associative learning, and Piaget’s cognitive development theory. Furthermore, it presents findings from various studies highlighting differences in imitation performance between children with ASD and their typically developing or developmentally delayed peers. The article shows that children with ASD often struggle with spontaneous imitation, particularly with meaningless gestures and facial expressions, while performing better on goal-directed actions and object-based imitation. It also discusses theoretical explanations for imitation difficulties in ASD, such as impairments in symbolic and motor representation, attentional flexibility, sensory integration, and social motivation. This article underscores the importance of understanding imitation mechanisms to inform the development of effective intervention strategies that enhance imitation skills and, in turn, support social and cognitive growth in children with ASD.
