Abstract: Algeria's efforts, the country continues to import substantial quantities of wheat, with annual imports exhibiting a consistent upward trajectory. This phenomenon invariably exerts consequences on the state budget and food sovereignty. The present article aims to examine the factors that determine the annual volume of wheat imports in Algeria. The findings of this investigation will contribute to the development of informed public policy. To this end, a quantitative approach based on an econometric study was adopted, initially incorporating 14 explanatory variables into the study. Following a thorough examination of the extant data, it was ascertained that a subset of seven variables could be incorporated into the model under consideration. The model was subsequently estimated using the ARDL method. The period of analysis covered from the year 2000 to 2023. The estimation results indicate that the volume of wheat imports into Algeria is primarily influenced, in descending order of impact, by: GDP per capita for the current year and the previous year, imports of goods and services for the previous year, the exchange rate, money supply for the previous year and the current year, wheat imports for the previous year, oil prices for the current year and the previous year, and local wheat production.
