Cultural Gaps And Linguistic Competences: The Effects Of Excluding Civilization Courses From Translation Curricula In Algerian Universities

Abstract

The teaching of civilization courses for translators is a key component of their education. It underscores the vital relationship between cultural understanding and linguistic proficiency. Translators are expected not only to transfer words between languages but also to bridge cultural gaps, adapt differences, and preserve the context of the source material. This responsibility enhances cultural competence, making civilization courses indispensable for translators. However, with the integration of the LMD system, Algerian universities gradually excluded civilization courses, focusing instead on linguistic competences, translation techniques, and strategies. These curricula appear to be devoid of the cultural substance of languages, which weakens translation training. This paper, employing a descriptive-analytical method, examines this issue and highlights the importance of civilization courses in translator training, suggesting some remedies to the hindrances posed by these curricula. يعد تدريس مقاييس الحضارة للمترجمين ركنا أساسيا في تكوينهم، إذ يبرز العلاقة الوثيقة بين الإدراك الثقافي والكفاءة اللغوية، وبالتالي، فإن دور المترجمين لا يقتصر على نقل الكلمات بين اللغات فحسب، بل عليهم رأب الفجوات الثقافية وتكييف الاختلافات والمحافظة على سياق النص الأصلي. كما تنمي هذه المسؤولية الكفاءة الثقافية، مما يجعل دروس الحضارة عنصرا لا غنى عنه في تكوين المترجمين، غير أن اعتماد نظام ل.م.د في الجامعات الجزائرية أدى إلى استبعاد هذه الدروس تدريجيا، وتركيز البرامج على الكفاءات اللغوية وتقنيات واستراتيجيات الترجمة، ففقدت هذه المناهج بعدها الثقافي وأنقص فاعلية تكوين المترجم. وتعتمد هذه الدراسة منهجًا وصفيا تحليليا، فتتناول الإشكالية المطروحة مبرزة أهمية دروس الحضارة في تكوين المترجمين، ومقترحةً حلولًا لمعالجة ما تثيره المناهج الراهنة من تحديات كلمات مفتاحية: مقياس الحضارة، مناهـج الترجمة، نظام ل.م.د، الكفاءة الثقافية، الفَّجوات الثَّقـافيَّة، الكَّفاءات اللُّــغويَّة
