Repair Receipts And Resistance: A Conversation-analytic Study Of Learner-learner Google Meet Talk And Its Implications For Task Design

Authors : Ahmed Gaid Oussama .

Abstract

This correlational study investigates repair sequences in learner-learner interactions within Google Meet breakout rooms, focusing on how EFL learners initiate, accept, or resist repair. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, combining Conversation Analysis (CA) with quantitative analysis, the study examines linguistic and embodied resources (e.g., camera use, screen-share) employed during repair. Furthermore, it explores the correlation between task features (information imbalance, built-in ambiguity) and the trajectory of repair negotiations. Data from 10 dyads of low-intermediate EFL Master One students at the University of Msila were collected over 20 hours across jigsaw and decision-making tasks. The analysis reveals significant patterns in repair initiation types, with task-specific variations in the frequency and nature of repair sequences. Findings provide granular evidence to refine task design and platform settings, moving beyond intuitive approaches to inform pedagogical practices in online language learning environments.
