In his work Lettres familières sur l’Algérie, the military officer Théodore Pein presents Djebel Boukahil as much more than a simple topographic and strategic landmark. He describes it as a "geographical knot" carrying both military and symbolic dimensions. This mountain forms a barrier separating the stable urban domain of the north from the open Saharan expanse to the south. It fits within a colonial vision in which geography becomes a tool for control and surveillance. Théodore Pein acknowledges the difficulty of dominating the Saharan space and the tribes who inhabit it, yet he emphasizes the importance of Boukahil in both exploratory and symbolic campaigns—as a gateway to an unsubdued and unknown South yet to be conquered. Although his narrative appears to be based on detailed field observations, his description is far from neutral: it is deeply marked by colonial instrumentalization. Thus, geography becomes a means of knowledge serving domination. Djebel Boukahil, in Pein’s discourse, becomes a point of convergence between topographical knowledge and imperial ambition, revealing the overlap between scientific observation and the logic of power and subjugation of local tribes.
