The toponymy of any country derives its characteristics from the foundations of social structure; especially with regard to language, beliefs, history, customs, traditions and myths, in addition to other elements related to geographical location, nature, climate and others. Such curiosity often prompts speakers to ask numerous questions about the origins and meanings of place names, particularly when it comes to regions that have seen the succession of many civilizations with diverse languages and cultures like Algeria. However, answers to these questions are often based on popular folklore, which is often intertwined with myths and superstitions. This is why, on several occasions, we have called for the creation of an Algerian toponymic dictionary written in Arabic and authored by Algerian scholars. Toponymy belongs to the field of applied linguistics but also draws from various other disciplines. It begins with lexicography to identify entries and their linguistic roots—whether they are Arabic, Berber, Punic, Roman, French, or others (as in Algeria's case). It then engages other linguistic sciences, such as phonetics, morphology, translation, and dialectology, to study the relationship of language or dialect with time and place. Subsequently, it incorporates non-linguistic fields, such as history, travel literature, and biographies, to verify the compatibility of place names with their historical contexts, drawing on events and prominent figures associated with the region. Moreover, geography and ecology might contribute to understanding the connection between place names and geographical features like mountains, plains, rivers, wells, deserts, seas, soil type, and natural resources (flora, fauna, and water sources) and other similar data. The interdisciplinary nature of toponymic research indicates its broad relationship with human life and its intricate details. This necessitates incorporating anthropology to uncover the meanings of ancient and obscure names, relying on the cultural heritage of civilizations that have passed through the studied region. It also calls for examining religion, shared languages, national symbols, mythology, folklore, customs, traditions, and other essential components of national identity. These aspects constitute the core of this study, which I have titled: Linguistic and cultural pluralism in Algerian toponomy.
